Getting Ready for the Future

Hubby and I have discussed it and decided we needed to make some changes around the house and about our current lifestyle. For one thing we need more storage for food and essentials. This came about after our trip to the grocery store and gas station last week and this week. We're astounded how much prices are climbing. Since we subscribe to some financial newsletters, we believe it's not going to end anytime soon. So, taking the advice our church has espoused for many, many years, we're upping storage on essentials items.

Now, I've been on a trend to spend less and that's truly not been hard for me. I'm spending nothing on frivolous things at all. Okay, the Italian lessons were a splurge but that's it. Our focus is on staying healthy and being able to help others if the need arises. Plus we've learned that in our neighborhood there have been some home invasions (and we live in a nice neighborhood) and that's scary for me. If you don't believe me, just look around at what's happening in the world today. Nooooo, I am not pessimistic (in fact, I'm very optimistic about the future); I'm just being realistic.

Gina Cooper's blog CatNapInnPrimitives will also be showing her fantastic stash of food and emergency supplies. Go see what she's done!

So I spent part of today loading hundreds of yards of fabric into boxes for storage in our garage attic. We cleared off one shelf at a time and put the fabric in the hallway. Then we took the food from a closet and put it on the shelves that previously had held fabric. My craft and sewing room is a luxury, food is not. It's essential. We have a ways to go but here's how it looks so far.

Perishable food goes inside. Paper items, soap, detergent, dehydrated foods and cleaning supplies go in the garage. Water is stored in garage also. A friend went to the cannery today and bought two 25#lbs. of hot cocoa. Each one two months ago was 23.10 but today she paid 33.50 for each. That's a 45% increase in just 2 months. I'm telling you that you need to get more food for your family because it is going sky high and be unavailable in some places soon probably.

This isn't even all of it. We had more spread around the house and in our pantry,

Several more shelves to go.

  2. That is a lot of fabric Connie!
I'm interested to know how you manage the expiry dates of the food you store. As there is such an amount, does it get difficult to keep track?

  4. We have a room out in our garage with food and emergency stuff. My husband stocks it and I try not to use stuff off of it :) I don't like to grocery shop, but it is part of my job. Anyhoo, your fabrics are gorgeous! Hope all is well!

  6. Hi Connie...I was looking at all your fabric and I must say, there are a few (OK several), that I'm on a first name basis with myself!! I've gotten rid of some of my stash - sold on ArtFire - or Etsy and given to Goodwill!

I store some food - not quite to the extent you do...not enough space for that.

    Have a great weekend!!

  7. The fabric is yummy! Wish you could eat it! LOL

I've got a lot of pretty fabric myself for a gal that doesn't really sew....but oh my, you've got me beat!!

You are so smart to store away such needed items.

Please tell me LB's cap did NOT say "touching will cost you"!!!!!!!

  8. Connie, I have a Mormon friend who does this and we should be so wise. Prices keep climbing while items keep getting smaller. Down south where we have our own coffee plant, coffee is now over $5 a lb which is high for the south. We only have emergency kits for hurricanes, so it something terrible should happen, we are out of luck. Ours is mostly things that have a long shelf life, so I also was wondering how do you keep things from expriring. You really must have been a great bank manager.
Love all the fabric. Such beautiful colors and designs. What fabrics I do have are mostly country, but great for making aprons. Have a great Saturday, because ours is filled with tornadoes today. Hugs, Pat

  11. Hi Connie,
A food storage is great to have and buying food in bulk is so much cheaper.. I grew up with a huge food storage. My parents had one and my Mom canned and baked and even made our Root Beer soda.
Good for you for planning ahead.
Have a sweet day and hugs, Elizabeth

  12. Hi Connie,
Thanks for popping over and for your advice!
I wonder about expiry dates on food? I've actually gone the other way and am trying to USE the food I have. I have always bought larger quantities but found they were being wasted, going stale or past their use by date. So now I actually buy smaller quantities, and fresher. I'm eating healthier, and I'm not losing money by keeping food that I don't end up using, know what I mean? Plus, I really dislike canned soup! lol!

  13. Ooooo, love your fabric! I wish we had room for storing food and supplies...this little farmhouse of ours is just not made for that. I don't even really have a pantry, just a shelf in the laundry room...ugh!

    Michele
